Sunday 15th February 2009 - 2nd before Lent

THE COLLECT
Almighty God,
you have created the heavens and the earth
and made us in your own image:
teach us to discern your hand in all your works
and your likeness in all your children;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who with you and the Holy Spirit
reigns supreme over all things,
now and for ever.
Amen

THE READINGS
New Testament: Col 1:15-20
Gospel: John 1:1-14

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
God our creator,
by your gift the tree of life
was set at the heart of the earthly paradise,
and the bread of life at the heart of your Church:
may we who have been nourished at your table on earth
be transformed by the glory of the Saviour's cross
and enjoy the delights of eternity;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

To think about this week:

Mr Micawber in David Copperfield:

Annual income twenty pounds, annual
expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen
shillings and sixpence, result happiness.

Annual income twenty pounds, annual
expenditure twenty pounds ought and
sixpence, result misery.
Charles Dickens

and on this day in 1971:

After 1200 years, Britain abandoned the
shilling and pence system for a decimal
currency.

Please pray for:

Peace in the world. Asking God's blessing on all people who suffer in conflicts the world over, especially for the peoples of Gaza and Israel.

David and Hannah Cleugh who will be joining the Team as Curates this summer.

All who live in Hammer Lane, Warborough.

In the diocese: Newbury Deanery: Area Dean Tom Moffat; Lay Chairman Roger Williams.

The sick in body, mind or spirit that they may know God's presence with them.

The repose of the souls of all those who have died. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

VICTIMS OF THE CREDIT CRUNCH in our communities are coming to the attention of all of us. The clergy would like to establish a discretionary fund for everyday relief. Collections at this year's Lent meetings will support this and other contributions are welcome.

ASH WEDNESDAY is on 25th February. There will be services at 9.30am at Berinsfield and 8pm at Long Wittenham to mark the beginning of the season of Lent.

LENT COURSE - There will be a series of talks on Sunday evenings at 7pm in Dorchester Abbey on the theme “Ways in to the Bible”. See the leaflet and posters. During Lent the evening services at Warborough will be shorter to allow people to get to the lent Course.
