Sunday 1st February 2009 - Candlemas

THE COLLECT
Almighty and ever-living God,
clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son
was this day presented in the Temple,
in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

THE READINGS
New Testament: Heb 2:14-end
Gospel: Luke 2:22-40

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna,
who lived to welcome the Messiah:
may we, who have received these gifts beyond words,
prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he
comes to bring us to eternal life;
for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.
Amen

To think about this week:

A friend is one who stands to share
your every touch of grief and care.

He comes by chance, but stays by choice;
your praises he is quick to voice.

No grievous fault or passing whim
can make an enemy of him.

And though your need be great or small,
his strength is yours throughout it all.

No matter where your path may turn
your welfare is his chief concern.

No matter where your dream may be
he prays your triumph soon to see.

There is no wish your tongue can tell
but what it is your friend's as well.

The life of him who has a friend
is double-guarded to the end.

Edgar A. Guest

and on this day in 1910:

Opening of the first labour exchanges in
Britain.

Please pray for:

Peace in the world. Asking God's blessing on all people who suffer in conflicts the world over, especially for the peoples of Gaza and Israel.

David and Hannah Cleugh who will be joining the Team as Curates this summer.

All who live in The Lydes, Newington.

The sick in body, mind or spirit, among them Stephen Selwood, Jenny Cross, Molly Bailey, Sandra Strong and Dixie Airey.

The repose of the souls of all those who have died. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.
